The wooden walls of an old hotel
Hardanger Fjord Lodge is located in an old hotel built in 1889. During the 1800s tourism flourished in Hardanger. People wanted to experience raw, unspoiled nature, fresh water and clean air. Here in Sunndal they could witness waterfalls, hike to the beautiful glacier lake Bondhusvatnet, the Folgefonna glacier and travel by boat on the fjord, all of witch is still as amazing now as it was then.
Your Hosts, Caroline, Harald and their dog Frøya, escaped the city life in 2018 to start a new life closer to the fjord and mountains.
"A friend of ours mentioned this old hotel by the quayside in Sunndal. We went there and talked to a farmer in the area who told us that the old hotel was going to be put out for sale, and some months later we were suddenly hotel owners. There where loads of work that needed to be done, and this we can tell you all obout when you get here, but in May 2019 we managed to reopen the doors of old "Hotel Sundal" as Hardanger Fjord Lodge.
We believe in taking care of what we already have. All of our furniture is vintage or handmade stuff picked up on our many travels. Here we sleep on beds of natural materials, we eat home made food from our region and we enjoy the surrounding nature. Here it is all about enjoying the good life."
Season: Spring and Summer
The surrounding nature is quite unique. Here you`ve got the southernmost alpine mountains in Norway stooping into our second longest fjord, topped off with the vast Folgefonna glacier - welcome to the Folgefonna National Park.
Whether you want to sit back, relax and enjoy the views from our sauna or take active part of the majestic scenery we believe there is something to sooth every taste.
You can go ski touring and ski some of the most beautiful mountains in Norway. Go fishing, biking, boating or hike Trolltunga - a full day hike up to a cliff situated 1500 meter above the fjord. There are also plenty of less traveled hikes in the area that is just as breathtaking. You can also ski at the Folgefonna Summer Ski Resort, explore the glacier by foot, go kayaking or just grab a coffee or a drink at the quayside with a view that is not like home.
We are Harald, Caroline and Frøya the dog. In late 2018 we escaped the city life to be closer to the mountains and the fjord, and we are now running Hardanger Fjord Lodge with true passion.
We are looking forward to meet you. Oh, and your four legged best friend is of course welcome.
